El Fuerte de San Antonio de Tavira, también conocido como de la rata o el Fuerte de la Isla de Las Liebres, se encuentra al este del lugar de cuatro aguas , en el estuario del río Gilão, junto a la barra de Tavira. Construido en la segunda mitad del siglo XVI, con la tarea de defender el puerto de Tavira, estaba en construcción cuando lo visító el rey Sebastião (1568-1578), en el año de 1573, y fue puesto bajo la advocación de San Antonio.
El fuerte fue activo hasta 1840, cuando, habiendo perdido su función militar, fue abandonado por orden del Gobernador de la provincia de Algarve.
